Peverley Back Just in Time: Lockout Reportedly Hours From End

As reported by Matias Strozyk via twitter on January 4, Rich Peverley finished his stint in Finland on Saturday (January 5th).

Peverley added a goal and an assist in his final game Saturday. While 23 points in 27 games in a Finnish league isn’t quite as impressive as Seguin’s numbers in the Swiss league or any number of his locked-out Bruins teammates playing elsewhere in Europe, Peverley is coming off a very strong 2011-2012 season despite missing lengthy periods of time due to multiple injuries.

Although Peverley played in only 57 games, he finished 7th on the Bruins in points. He was one of the most effective Bruins in the frustrating 1st round series against the Capitals, finally hitting his groove while able to stay healthy for a sustained period of time before the team was eliminated. In 7 playoff games, Peverley led the team in scoring with 5 points (2nd was Ference with 4…wow, remember how infuriating that series was? The Bruins sure made Holtby look much better than he is). Peverley also had the most goals for the Bruins in the playoffs with 3. Had he remained healthy all season, he would have had a career year.

As Peverley is set to return back to North America – perhaps he is en route right now – the NHL and NHLPA have been negotiating for hours and are rumored to be almost ready to agree to a new CBA any moment now. According to sources in the media who have been camped outside where the NHL and PA have now been meeting for 16 (!!!) hours straight, there’s lots of good news.

If the NHL lockout ends at the same time Peverley returns to North American soil, I would not call it a coincidence. That’s divine intervention.

Welcome home Raptor Jesus Peverley.

Update: multiple sources (pretty much everyone. Anyone. I can’t even choose one source to link or cite) confirming the lockout is over. I repeat: THE LOCKOUT IS OVER.

Bruins Abroad: Breaks Are Coming

As we all know nine members of the Boston Bruins organization are currently playing overseas in Europe for various clubs.  In recent news it was reported that goaltender Tuukka Rask had re-injured his groin, an injury that sidelined him from March of last year right up through the playoffs.  We also got word that forward Patrice Bergeron had an upper body injury, but that it wasn’t that serious.  Bergeron spent a week resting an injured hand and returned to the HC Lugano line up today.  He managed to post a goal and two assists in his debut game since the injury, contributing in all three goals the team scored today in their 4-3 loss.

Rask, was back to work on Friday, the 27th proving that his groin injury is not a major concern.  His return was exciting for Boston fans around the nation as we were able to breathe a sigh of relief, but also because he was taking on teammate David Krejci.  Rask was able to lead HC Plzen to a shootout victory entering the game with a 93.55 save percentage and now holding a 7-2 record.

Rask played the entire game against HC Pardubice and saved 29 of 32 shots he faced, coming up big in the shoot-out.  His health will continue to be questioned by Bruins fans as we sit with anticipation for every game he is in net for, but for now we can be proud of his triumphs.

While we have all been hearing about Tyler Seguin and how the Swiss love him with his scarves and 15 points in 11 games, David Krejci hasn’t been doing bad either.  In nine games he has five goals and four assists, not bad for the struggling center.  It seems as though he has found his style of play again, let’s just hope he can keep up the consistency if and when the NHL season starts.

For captain Zdeno Chara, he got to play for a new head coach on the 29th, scoring a power play goal for Lev Praha instilling an early 2-0 lead.  While the lead didn’t withstand, and Lev lost in overtime to Metallurg Novokuznetsk.  However, the captain will have a bit of a break coming up from November 4 – November 13 along with forwards Tyler Seguin and Rich Peverley.  Goaltender Anton Khudobin will also have a break while the Finland Karjala Cup and German Deutschland Cup are being held.  Both are round-robin tournaments that are a part of the Euro Hockey Tour used to find future talent for World Championship teams.

While it has been reported that Tyler Seguin is expected to come home on his break and visit Boston and Toronto, it has yet to be determined if the rest of the Bruins members will do the same.  Only time will tell, until then we will keep cheering them on from across the ocean. Keep up the good work men!

Peverley to Finland

Another day, another Bruin signing to playing overseas. This form of temporary employment though really sad is necessary for the players to maintain their skills. I think the benefit of it all is that in the contracts there is a part that says if and when the NHL lock out is over, the players can return to their NHL teams. In this case, all of the Bruins players will return to Boston.

Peverley has joined the  JYP Jyvaskyla of the Finnish SM-liiga and will arrive in Finland later this week. Since September of 2010, the Finnish Club and the Bruins entered a partnership agreement agreement meaning that the teams will be able to transfer players and have them train with the partner club and within the partner club’s developmental system, as well as exchange tactics and scouting information. I think that this partnership may have definitely swayed Pevs decision.

Club chairman Jukka Seppanen said that Peverley’s style of play was ideal for the Finnish league and though it’s sad that this lock out is seemingly long lasting, it’s good to see that Pevs will be in good hands.

Bruins Birthday Wishes

Happy Birthday to center Rich Peverley (Credit:flickr/slidingsideways)

Not only is it 81 days until Bruins hockey is back in our lives, but today we celebrate the birth of one of our beloved B’s. Today is Rich Peverley‘s 30th birthday and we can only hope he’s celebrating appropriately! So in honor of Pev’s lets take a look at the centers time as a Bruin.

This season Peverley posted 11 goals and 31 assists and while that’s not the most amazing stats, he was battling injury a lot of the season and played in only 57 games.

October 8th against the Tampa Bay Lightning was prime Peverley time as he scored not only his 1st goal of the season but his 2nd.

Here’s a look at the first goal:

Peverley is signed to the Bruins through the 2014-15 season which means his time is Boston is not over anytime soon. This upcoming season I think so long as he remains healthy will be a good season. I definitely see Peverley as a player that could be an asset on our ever failing power play.

So let’s send our birthday wishes to Peverley and start getting excited as we’re getting closer and closer to October.

Daily Countdown: 119 Days

Rich Peverley (Photo Credit: Steph Phillips)

Today marks yet another day closer to the 2012-2013 season. We’re another day closer to the double digit days people! Today we can reflect on a blowout win the Bruins provided us with last season against the Canucks as Corey Schneider took the net and allowed the Bruins four goals to their none. The star of ths game, Rich Peverley. Peverley scored the first goal just over half way through the first period, and sealed the Bruins fate as he netted the fourth and final goal in the third period only a few minutes in.

Rich Peverley has proven to be a substantial and important player to the Bruins organization and he is one that we can definitely look forward to seeing more of come the 2012-2013 season as he signed a contract mid-season.  If Chris Kelly doesn’t come back to Boston, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Peverley with the assistant Captaincy.

What a beautiful goal.

Bruins Reflect on Early Exit

Improvement seems to be the word going from play to player to coach to player. After being eliminated in the first round of Stanley Cup Playoffs, I would definitely agree that you can only improve for the next season. Knowing that the Bruins will have all summer to prepare for the 2012-2013 season rather than playing for their second consecutive Stanley Cup is hard but it’s a lesson learned.

I think what is hardest for the Bruins players and fans alike to take is that first round series was our to take and we let it slip away becoming the 12th straight champion team unable to defend the title the next season.

“A lot of thinking about lost opportunity,” Rich Peverley said. “That’s the way I’m looking at it. We had a really good opportunity in my opinion to go far and even have a chance. So it’s very unfortunate, and I guess you learn from these events.”(Via Bruins)

Peverley was one of the bright spots of the B’s roster during their brief playoff run finishing with 3 goals and 2 assists. But clearly there was room for …you guessed it improvement with the team as a whole.

One player that definitely could have made a bigger spark in the playoff run was Milan Lucic

“Maybe I put too much pressure on myself or something like that, but definitely not happy with the way that I’ve played in the playoffs and hopefully I can figure that out” Lucic said. I definitely have a lot of time here to think about it in the summer here so like I said think about it, try to figure out to get back to that playoff player that I used to be.”(Via Bruins)

If there is one thing that needs to be IMPROVED, it’s the power play. In the 7 games against the Capitals, the B’s were 2 for 23 on the power play. This lack of power play authority in the playoffs is something that the B’s are accustomed too and that is not a good thing. But with the summer comes room for change and hopefully a new outlook.

There really is no better way to end this post then this:

Backstrom Suspended: What It Means for Boston

Nicklas Backstrom receives 1-game suspension (Photo Credit: Trixy Larue/Flickr)

In the winding seconds of Game 3 Monday night in Washington, forward Nicklas Backstrom would perform an act that could quite possibly cost his team. As Alex Ovechkin and Rich Peverley exchange trips to each other, Backstrom skates in and gets between the two men.  With Peverley raising his stick, the story is that Backstrom(who had missed 40 games with a concussion this season) felt threatened and reacts ‘recklessly’ in raising his stick and cross-checking Rich Peverley straight in the face. An act that was not uncommon in Game 3 and went unnoticed through most of the game.  Backstrom received a match penalty for his actions and because there was no injury to Peverley and he had no prior fines or suspensions, he is only going to miss one game. Not a BIG deal, right? If you’re a Caps fan, this is a HUGE deal. (Remember the way they reacted when Ovechkin missed 3-games this season? Yeah..) So the question that remains is, what does this mean for Boston?

Without Backstrom in the line up they Caps lose a strong forward, one who is capable of making game-winning plays/goals as seen in Game 2 of the Quarter Finals this year.  With his team being down 2-1 in the series, you can guarantee that the Capitals are stressing on who is going to pick up the slack.  Most likely we can expect to see forward Mathieu Perrault fill in, as he did when Backstrom was out injured.

The advantage Boston is provided with is a team that relies on their star players to perform for them, when you take part of that option away, the game in a sense, crumbles. With the Bruins being an easily adaptable team (most of the time) this should pose as an opportunity for them to shut down their offensive opportunity with ease. They are able to focus primarily on their top scorer Alex Ovechkin and keep his abilities at a minimum.

One can also assume that the amount of head shots presented by the Caps will lower considering the outcome of Backstrom, but one can never really know in the playoffs.  Oh wait, silly me, the team targeting heads is the Bruins. Right.

B’s Capitalize Against Caps; Game 3 Recap

Zdeno Chara scored the game winner for game 3 (Credit:Dinur Blum/ Flickr)

The Capitals may have scored the first goal of the game but it was the Bruins who would get the last and the win. In a series that is turning into WHEN WILL SOMEONE SCORE as opposed to who will win, it was nice to see the B’s get the dub. Tim Thomas made his epic return to DC after the fiasco that was the Bruins white house visit and he was definitely reminded of it thanks to a few clever Caps fans and our presidents face. But like the amazingly talented goalie that he is, Thomas didn’t budge.

Washington didn’t make this game easy. In fact it was so back and fourth that I would literally throw my phone and then have to pick up to tweet my excitement two minutes later. Like I said before, the Caps got the first goal thanks to a power play opportunity towards the end of the first. It was Alexander Semin who got credit for the goal. The B’s wouldn’t score in the first but Rich Peverley would score 38 seconds into the second to tie the game. No sooner did us fans start cheering then Alex Ovechkin would get past Thomas to give the Caps the edge once again.

But that wouldn’t be the end of the scoring. With half the game remaining, Daniel Paille  evened up the game thanks to some smart puck handling and a great rebound off a Greg Zanon shot. To start off the third, Brian Rolston got a BEAUTIFUL rebound past Braden Holtby to give the B’s the lead for the first time in the game. With six minutes remaining, Brooks Laich decided hey I love playing in overtime, let me tie the game again. And so he did. Fortunately for us, we have Zdeno Chara or oh captain my captain on the team and sir steps up when necessary so with less than two minutes to go, he sealed the win with a goal.

The Bruins have off tomorrow and return for game four on Thursday.

Grading the Bruins: A Cup A Bruin Style

Earlier this week CSNNE reporter Joe Haggerty wrote up an article grading each and every player on the Boston Bruins based on their performance in the regular season. He also posted a similar article last season, after the Bruins won the Cup.  The purpose of this post is much of the same, a comparison of notes if you will.  We are going to take an in-depth look at each and every player on the team and grade them based on season performance, as well as predict how they will be effective in the playoffs.

Bruins Take Charge Against Lightning

Congrats on 1002 games Chara (Credit: Slidingsideways/ Flickr)

Home ice seems to mean a lot whenever the Boston Bruins play the Tampa Bay Lightning. In the three games that these two teams have played against one another, home ice meant winner. Well tonight the Lightning hit the TD Garden ice in good old Boston for the forth and final regular season meet up.

Before the game started the Bruins put on a beautiful presentation to celebrate Zdeno Chara’s 1000 game which took place on Saturday. The ceremony was pretty cool and what’s cooler is Chara is the 9th defenseman in NHL history to ever play 1000 games. Captain Z deserved all of the praise and presents but my favorite thing was the massive silver replica hockey stick…that thing was HUGE!

We know return you to your regularly scheduled hockey game. So the B’s kept their line up the same as Sunday meaning Daniel Paille, Joe Corvo, Mike Mottau, and newly acquired Torey Krug got the healthy scratches. Goal tender wise it was different so Tim Thomas got the start against the Lightning’s Dwayne Roloson.

Steven Stamkos gets the first goal in the game (shocking) five minutes into the first getting his season goal tally to 54. When credit is due I give props so good work sir. So far B’s wise the Brad Marchand- Patrice Bergeron- Rich Peverley line is looking pretty good in getting some pressure on Roloson. At 9:06 Shawn Thornton gets set up by a beautiful pass from Chara for his 5th goal of the season. That would be his first goal in 36 games…his last goal was a penalty shot against the Winnipeg Jets (I was there!!). That was all the scoring that happened in the first.

Second period was kind of boring. But there was a goal and it was the Bruins so yay. With 4:55 to go Chara with a slap shot from the point got a rebound to Dennis Seidenberg to make it 2-1 Bruins. Something positive to take from the first two periods is that the Bruins are 22-2-0 when leading after 2.

Then third period happened and at 14:14 Stamkos got his 55th of the year…yawn. The Bruins are holding most of the momentum but Tampa is staying alive. Not too long after Adam McQuaid took a hit and went down hard head first. Not a good sign for someone that has had head problems this season. But thankfully he does return to the bench. At 8:26 Benoit Pouliot scores his 14th of the season and puts the Bruins back on top. With 4:10 left Brad Marchand makes it a 4-2 game and no sooner was Roloson pulled leaving an empty net. Peverley, back and stronger than ever, took advantage of the open net and secured the win with a 5-2 victory.

This is the third win in a row for the Bruins and having this kind of momentum is so important come playoffs. Bruins play their next game at home against the Washington Capitals.
