Providence Profiles: Kevan Miller

Another Providence Profile, another opportunity to write about a Hockey East player. This time it’s former University of Vermont player, defenseman Kevan Miller.

Following his senior season at UVM, Miller signed an amateur tryout contract with the P-Bruins. He played 6 games that season, finishing with a +2 rating despite no points and nine penalty minutes.

In October of 2011, Miller was signed to a two-year entry-level by the Bruins and spent his first pro season In Providence. He was the second-leading scorer amongst the P-Bruin defenseman with 3 goals and 21 assists in 65 games and had a team-best +20 with 98 penalty minutes.

So far Miller has played in 21 games this season with one assist and 15 penalty minutes. Needless to say Miller is a smart defenseman and an asset for any organization. I also really enjoy that he’s always willing to drop the gloves if necessary.

Cross Returns to Providence

After being assigned to the ECHL South Carolina Stingrays on October 11th, defenseman Tommy Cross has been reassigned to Providence. Since being assigned, Cross has skated in 22 games for the Stingrays leading the team in scoring with 17 points (6 goals, 11 assists).

Clearly the defenseman has been nothing short of an asset for the Stingrays so it makes sense that Providence would recall him in hopes of turning their losing record around.

Cross joined Providence at the end of their 2011-2012 season after graduating from Hockey East power house Boston College. He was Boston’s second round draft pick in the 2007 entry draft and was about of a Boston College team that won two NCAA championships.

I have gotten the opportunity to see Cross in action against my school UMass Amherst and I have nothing but compliments for the 23-year-old. Hopefully his addition to the Providence roster will help them gain some victories.

From BU to the Boston Bruins

As I posted earlier this summer , there were a few players from Hockey East schools tat made their way to the Bruins development camp. Now it’s being reported by Scott McLaughlin of College Hockey News that one of them has traded in their senior year of college hockey for a chance to play for the Black and Gold.

You may remember Boston University alternate captainJustin Courtnallwho was invited to partake in the Bruins developement camp back in July. If his last name sounds familiar, it should be. Courtnall is the son of  Geoff Courtnall, who was signed by the Bruins and played for them from ’83 to ’88. His uncle is Russ Courtnall, yet another NHL player so it’s safe to say Justin grew up around hockey.

Anyway, Courtnall signed an entry level contract with the Bruins today meaning his time at BU is over. In three seasons with the Terriers, Courtnall recorded 7 goals and 6 assists in 92 games.

This contract might surprise some considering right now the NHL is in a not so pleasant labor dispute and everyday the idea of a lock out seems more evident.

Here’s a look at Courtnall in action scoring a shoot out goal in a Tampa Bay Lightning Development Camp:

What the future holds for the NHL right now is unknown but for now welcome to the Boston Bruins organization Justin!
